Boyfriend gifts, three occasions? Thanks!?
Q. So this winter my boyfriend and I will be celebrating my birthday, his birthday, our one year anniversary, and christmas. We are both in high school and are doing gifts for all three! So I accidentally saw pictures of what he got me on this phone :/ it stinks I didn't mean to and he knows that. But anyway, for my birthday he got me a $400 necklace and a $150 ring for out anniversary. Which is so sweet and generous! So I was thinking of giving him the 65 inch TV my family doesn't want anymore, and/or a PS3, but he knows that I have both of those in mind. I also know that clothes are an option, and he already has a nice watch and other gaming systems. I would love ideas of creative things or anything to get him, something really good! … [cont.]

Should I tell my aunt that her gifts aren't good?
Q. Every year for my birthday, Christmas, and any other gift giving occasion, my aunt gives me a pair of earrings. The problem is that I don't have pierced ears. I have considered it, but I don't really like ear piercings. Should I tell her that all her gifts are going to waste? I would just give them to someone else, but I don't know any girls with pierced ears.

A. Next time you get a get earrings, inform your aunt that you don't have pierced ears. If she offers to get your ears pierced and you decide that you are okay with it, go ahead with it. But if you don't want pierced ears, tell her you don't want to see wasted presents.

What is proper etiquette in giving bridal shower and wedding gifts?
Q. A few of my friends came to both my bridal shower and wedding last year and gave a shower gift (ranging from about $20-25) and then came to the wedding but did not give a wedding gift. Several of them are getting married soon, so should I do the same, or give gifts for both? Is it customary to some people to only do one or the other? I personally have always given gifts for both occasions, if invited, but would like to know other people's opinions.

A. Invitations to the bridal shower are not always the same as to the wedding. You ask the closest people to you to the shower. All relatives,co-workers of bride, groom, both parents, classmates, family of the wedding party, etc, and friends of everyone to the wedding. Those people not invited to the shower usually give a beautifully wrapped gift or an envelope with cash or check in it at the wedding. There can also be a personal bride shower for the very best girl friends, sisters, bridal party, and sometimes the mother's where the guests bring lingerie and honeymoon type extras. You can be invited to all three but you do not have to bring a gift to all three unless it doesn't hurt you financially or if you spend less on 2 or 3 gifts but add up to… [cont.]

Too Poor For Buying Gifts?
Q. I don't have any money, ever. I don't get allowance because my family is poor. Friends always buy me cute things, even when it's not my birthday. I always tell them not to, because I have no way to repay them, but they continue to do it. I want to buy things for them on gift-giving occasions but I just don't have any money to. I feel like the most horrible friend ever. All I can ever do is draw pictures, but no one wants that. It's depressing because they never stop giving me gifts even when I've asked them to stop repeatedly (because of how much it depresses me). Any advice on what to do? (And don't tell me to get a job. I'm trying, and I'm in school anyway so it's difficult no matter what.) I DO accept the gifts very gratefully, even… [cont.]

Should birthday gifts be something useful for everyday or something rare\unique for special occasions ?
Q. Its one of my fancy friends birthday soon, and she has been goin on n on n on about a particular type of bag, which she can use for like normal days. I bought her that, but now i'm thinking, its kinda not very fancy, and very very normal, so i'm having second thoughts about gifting this to her, although i know she wants this.

A. I have a "fancy friend" as well, it is always a challenge when buying gifts. Since you know for a fact this is a bag she wanted, I wouldn't stress too much. Just wrap it up really nice, be sure to get her a really nice and appropriate card too. Don't blow your budget, but if you can comfortably afford it and want to, you could either take her out for dinner/and or drinks, get a fancy cosmetic such as a Dior eye palette from Sephora, or a bottle of nice wine or gift card for one of her favorite stores. Don't worry, it sounds like you did fine.

How do you feel about getting terrible gifts?
Q. On several occasions, I have gotten gifts that were so abysmal, I wished I had gotten nothing at all. One time, a friend came from abroad to spend a few months in my house. He presented me with a t-shirt... the ugliest, most god-aweful t-shirt you could imagine. It wasn't just a matter of taste; he never wore anything like this, and everyone agreed this was something he picked up at the airport out of a remainder bin. Another time, I let a family stay with me, rather than letting them spend thousands of dollars on an apartment for the summer. I also lent them my car many days, while I took the train. This time, I had no worries about bad gifts. They gave me nothing. Recently, I had another foreign visitor. He presented me with a… [cont.]

It also sounds like you willingly let yourself be taken advantage of.. have you not heard the old expression that guests, like fish, stink after 3 days? :) Don't let these people take advantage of your generosity.. they aren't worth it.

Best gifts for the best man?
Q. I am getting married on Saturday (in 3 days) and I haven't got anything to my best man yet. Please, I will greatly appreciate any input on this. I want to spend around 200-300 dollars. What could be good gifts for this occasion?

A. The most common thing to give a best man is an alcohol flask, that's the tradition, you can even get them engraved. A nice watch is common, pocket knifes, items like that. At the price range you're looking at think of something you'd give him for his birthday and possibly give him a flask on the side too to make a more traditional and personalized gift. You could even make him a gift basket with some stuff in it. Maybe a nice bottle of wine? You could include a bottle of crown royal with that flask. Cigars and money clips are also common. Congrats on your wedding and good luck!

We are having a house warming/ home coming and do not want our friends to bring gifts... we would like to have a "no hassle" party and have fun! I have researched this on the web too death! I understand that we shouldn't even mention gifts however I believe this occasion is a little different from the norm. Could use a few suggestions so we don't offend anyone? Thanks

A. "Thank you kindly, but no gifts will be accepted." or "We appreciate your generosity, but gifts will not be necessary for this event." or some combination of. I can appreciate everyone's suggestion, but if you say "charity" blah blah blah they still will bring you something... It needs to be simple, to the point, and visible. People will comply.

Do you buy your friends gifts? Like if you find something you think they'd like?
Q. Do people normally buy their friends gifts other than special occasions? For example, you are out shopping and find a shirt that your friend would love.. would you buy it for them? I think it might be nice to do, and I know other groups of friends that do. I've had the same friends for over 10 years and we usually stick to special occasions. Actually.. I have done this before. When my friend studied in Japan I bought him the Harry Potter dvd's along with some movies that remind him of our younger days.

Do Muslims have any occasions when the giving and receiving of gifts is appropriate?
Q. My friendly Muslim neighbours make a point of giving us a small Christmas gift which we return. Is there an appropriate way to acknowledge their religious festivals? I would appreciate any advice.

A. There is no gift exchange holiday for Muslims and in fact we don't ever want it to become one of our traditions, as it would be an unacceptable innovation to turn it into a tradition. So, respecting that, you want to be sure not to give it on, say, their "birthday", any other known holiday like christmas, etc. Because our good deeds are multiplied in reward during the entire month of Ramdan, this is the time Muslims will be more active in gift giving and charity overall. So, if you were to pick a time, I'd say Ramadan. Please don't just give it on the Eid, as that is becoming an innovation by some Muslims. Although it is permissible to give a gift on that day, ONLY so long as it is NOT turned into a tradition. But there are more… [cont.]

A. I have a similar situation, but I'm the guy. I have no money, and I'm in college. My gf gets me stuff, even though I tell her I don't want any. I DO make her cards and such for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. The guy should do what he can, but if he can't, the girl should be okay with that. It's V-day tomorrow, and me and my GF are going picnicking.

I need help on gifts or ideas for my boyfriend on our 3rd anniversary!..?
Q. We are both 19 years old. Our anniversary would be on 8th of August. I want to give him something special. I would wish to celebrate the day with something unusual but I think we have classes at school that day. I have already given him gifts on certain occasions like wallet, watch, picture frame with collage of our photos. I can't think of any other gift ideas. Any ideas about what I'll give or what we can do that day? Thanks in advance! :) By the way, is it okay if I give him sunflowers?.. Because it's the flower he likes most. And I read that sunflower is the flower gift for 3rd anniversary.
