How can I get greeting card companies to consider my artwork for their cards?
Q. Some artists I know think that my work is ideally suited for greeting cards. I'd like to sell art to greeting card companies. Any ideas on the best approaches? Thank you.

A. If you aren't sure where to start, I really, really recomend the book "Artists and Graphic Designer's Market." I included a link to this year's copy. It not only has suggestions for how to submit, but addresses to every greeting card company in America as well as the guidelines for submitting to each. Be warned, though, they're really selective. My boyfriend and I each submit to dozens of things a year, and only every once in a while do our submissions get accepted. The bottom line, though, is to keep trying. If your work at it hard enough and if your art is good, you'll make progress.

How do I start my own Greeting Card company in California?
Q. I have this great idea to publish these cards that I haven't seen any where on the net or in the stores. But I don't know what to do to get started or what the requirements are for starting it. Does anyone have any advice or any helpful hints? I have 13 cards so far but my motivation level is dropping. I've been online and I've done the research but I can't find anything that states the actual steps that I need to take in order to start my own business. I see alot of articles that tell you how to submit your own 'writings' to other greeting card companies...and that's not what I need. I need to know what actual steps that I need to take in order to start my own greeting card business. any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Cyn

A. Step 1. Decide the business model you want. You direct to the end user via the web, or you to a wholesaler like the corner card store, or you to Hallmark. Step 2. Decide on the form factor. Fan fold vertical, or horizontal or just the card with no open flap. Step 3.Decide how to take orders. Most larger groups use the ANSI X12 electronic ordering system. With distribution via the web or via a more direct model you can take 1-800 orders -- who will answer the phone. Step 4. Decide on the quality. High and low volume, or low and higher volume. For example, are the graphics on photo paper or printed direct to the card stock. Step 5. Decide on a printing company. Step 6. Decide if you want to sell internationally. Hope this gets you… [cont.]

What is an appropiate greeting word for an academic phone interview?
Q. I'm calling a woman that is going to interview me on the phone. Should I say "hi" or is this too casaul? What is an appropiate greeting word in this circumstance?
Asked by A guy - Tue Nov 11 08:42:30 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Don't try to be too showy--it makes it very obvious to the interviewer that you're trying too hard. Stick with the every appropriate "Hello. How are you?" There's nothing wrong with that. And make sure that you are smiling--it really does come through over the phone. Most of all, don't try to be someone you're not...just be a genuine, but polished, version of yourself :)

How do I become more comfortable greeting friends by first name?
Q. My problem is greeting someone by their name instead of just saying hi. I want to do it because its polite and friendly, but I haven't grown up doing it so it feels weird. Suggestions?
Asked by Curmic and the magical wombats - Mon May 4 16:32:49 2009 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. It is difficult when greeting new people especially so I understand what you mean. Maybe greeting the person in an open way will be more comfortable for example instead of just saying "hi John" and then nothing more you could say "hi John hows it going?" or "hi John how are you?". Take note of how they greet you too, to give you more of idea what to say.

A. Get some board or a cork poster board and take some elastic and criss cross the elastic slanted in one direction across the board and then do the opposite direction ...like this ###. That way you can slip your cards under the elastic and you can display them open or closed and even move them around if you wish.

How do I submit my ideas to a greeting card business?
Q. I have been designing inspirational postcards, greeting cards, and pocket size inspiration cards. Now, I need customers. =-) Any ideas where to start? I am a single mother of three children and am working on no income. I do everything from my home office and basically need to know how I can jump in to the market on fixed resources. Any information or ideas would be very much appreciated! FYI: I do have my own online business at desertrosedesign.net which I pay for monthly. I am trying to drive traffic to my site, and having little luck there. Does anyone know where I can find a list of Greeting Card companies for free rather than paying the $50-$100 most places are charging for that list?

How can I press fall leaves on a greeting card while preserving the color?
Q. I'd like to use some fall leaves on a greeting card. Never done this before. Any ideas and information on how I can do this? Any tips.. Thanks guys.
Asked by Flame - Fri Dec 7 17:42:57 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. even though the fall leaves are dead, there is still moisture in the leaves and applied to paper using something to seal over top, like decoupage or contact paper wouldn't seal between the leaf and the paper and it would probably bubble the paper or mold and would not preserve your leaf. I would apply contact paper to the front and back of your leafs then glue that to the front of your paper, or at the top, hole punch 2 holes a half inch from the top, about 2 inches apart from each other then pull ribbon through and tie with a bow. You might also be able to dip your leaves in Polyurethane a few times but you'll need to practice a few testers before you apply them to cards. Just glue to the front after you give them a day or two to dry.… [cont.]

Where can I get some copyright free information on making greeting cards?
Q. My wife makes greeting cards as a hobby and I have created a website for her to show off her creations. I would also like to add some tutorials on how to make cards, and information about the products and equipment available, techniques and styles, etc. My wife is too busy making cards to write and I don't know enough about it myself to write anything of merit. Do you know of any websites, ebooks, etc, with relevant information that I can copy onto my website? Obviously, they would need to be copyright free or public domain. I wouldn't mind spending some money for a good ebook as long as I would have the right to extract information and display it on the site. If anyone has written anything that I can use, I'd be grateful if you… [cont.]

A. Why not just include links to other sites such as docrafts. Cardmaking is now a massively popular hobby and there is plenty of info around. Half a dozen monthly magazines, lots of books (check the local library), Craft & Create and QVC on Sky and the internet, evening classes, workshops, etc. etc. Mention your local craft shop(s). Your wife's internet suppliers. There is no need to go to a lot of trouble reinventing the wheel.

How much is the Online Greeting Cards market worth?
Q. Our company aims to penetrate the lucrative online greeting cards market. However how much is this market actually worth in the UK and the United States of America?

A. None of the companies in the market have listed stock, so it's very hard to say. The very fact that there are no PLC's in the game is a good indication it's not a huge market.
