Why is the presence of frozen H20 important to future manned missions?
Q. I need help for a science essay. The full question is: Why is the presence of frozen H20 important to future manned missions and for the search of previous life and E.T. (Extra Terrestrial) life?
Asked by mfb1995 - Wed Mar 4 19:48:56 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Water is heavy, and if we had to take everything we need with us, exploration would be a LOT harder. Having water at the landing point makes things merely difficult rather than impossible. As for why it has to be frozen, the conditions for liquid water really don't exist on the Moon or Mars, not enough atmospheric pressure to keep it from boiling away.

What does the presence of limestone indicate about an area's ancient history?
Q. What does the presence of limestone indicate about an area's ancient history? A. The land used to be an area of many volcanoes. B. Glaciers covered the land at one time. C. The land used to be much higher. D. Shallow seas once covered much of the land.
Asked by dez - Wed Nov 12 09:21:15 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Limestones indicate shallow warm seas at the time of deposition. Lime, CaCO3 is one of the odd substances that has its maximum solubility at low temperatures. As the water temperature goes up the solubility goes down and so the lime is precipitated- dropped out of solution. Shallow seas are more easily warmed by sun light and do not have much mixing from cold water at depth. (ANother note. Limestones also usually form a some distance from the coast. Near the coast the denser sediments drop out, the soluble lime is carried farther away from shore. This tends to show the original was shallow to a considerable distance from shore.)

Psychologically speaking, Do you think the presence of armed forces can cause people to kill others?
Q. Especially in places of the world where there is no real law or judicial organisation... Does the presence of armed forces give the impression upon the unsuspecting populace of such a country or state that an armed force is required in order to deal with the problems present in their society? Would this give people the idea that it would be necessary to kill those they see as problem-causers, while looking at themselves as problem-solvers?

A. As far as I know, in certain hot spots of the world military forces are used as a means of establishing security in a given zone. They are armed because they have to be able to defend themselves. UN peace keeping forces aren't armed or at least they weren't before 911.

How to conduct simple laboratory tests to conclude the presence of ammonium ions?
Q. Chemistry HW: Ammonia and nitric acid can react to form ammonium nitrate which can be used as an explosive. A terrorist was suspected of carrying a sample of ammonium nitrate up a plane. Suggest how the police can conduct simple laboratory tests to conclude the presence of ammonium ions.
Asked by Jonzz - Fri Jun 18 21:53:03 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. NH4+(aq) + strong base (e.g. NaOH) ---> NH3(g) + H2O(l) It's simple! Use litmus test for NH3(g) evolution. Dissolve your suspected sample in water in a test tube and add NaOH. Your sample contains Nh4+ if ammonia gas (NH3) should evolve according to the above reaction. Heat the solution while placing a piece of moist red litmus just above the opening of the test tube. If NH3 (a base) is present, your red litmus must turn to blue.

How can the presence of an ion in a solution be detected?
Q. How can the presence of an ion in a solution be detected? If a reaction produces an insoluble salt, what will you notice happening in the test tube?
Asked by doncooperjuan - Sun Oct 15 16:53:37 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The presence of an ion can be determined by adding the cation or anion that will form an insoluble salt. Then you will see the salt crash out of solution in the bottom of the test tube. For example: If you have sulfate ion in an aqueous solution, adding an aqueous calcium carbonate solution will cause the Ca+ ions from calcium carbonate and the S04-2 ions to form an insoluble salt (calcium sulfate) that will crash out in the bottom of the test tube.

How would the presence of cocaine in the blood stream effect a suicide investigation?
Q. More specifically: if some guy committed suicide and it was absolutely obvious to the police that it wasn't foul play, how would the presence of cocaine in his blood stream and the discovery of a small amount of it found among his possessions effect the inquiry? The reason I need this information is because I'm writing a screenplay for a movie I'm going to shoot. The guy wasn't high when he jumped, so the drugs have nothing to do with his death. His parents are dead, he has no wife or children, no friends and he doesn't work. Would the police not close the case until they found out where the drugs came from? Would they launch a separate inquiry? Would they not care because the drugs are irrelevant to his death? Thank you very much.

A. They would close the case after doing small investigation of the evidence. The investigators would have no problem as to justify this suicide after the medical examines rules suicide. Good luck.

What is the alternative mechanism that might accomplish the presence of carbon recycling on earth?
Q. Please, help me with the Physical science class question. Here's the full question, if mine sounds complicated. The presence of carbon recycling on Earth (as a buffer against a faint early Sun and excessive temperature later) might strike some as a "just right" scenario. A. Not sure about the question but as most life on earth is referred to as "carbon based", I can say that the decomposition of carbon, the absorption of carbon by plant life and its journey through the life cycle, and the dissolving of excess carbon in the oceans all have seem to have a stabilizing effect but this is just an observation of chemical interactions that could be thrown into chaos by a number of factors and may not be stabilizing at all but simply evidence that we have reached a measurable equilibrium. Carbon is so common that it is hard to imagine another mechanism based on the same percentages of the same elements that seem to be common in the universe, but varying temperatures and light have a way or revealing other… [cont.]

I can't think a military intervention (not invasion) which occured before rampant violence and killing. In places like Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, the killing had become an ordinary part of life.

A. Nope. It is impossible to sense the presence of an imaginary being. Claiming to have the ability to do so is not a good sign of mental stability.

What happens to hydrogen in the presence of platinum?
Q. I know that hydrogen is adsorbed onto the surface of platinum, but is it still molecular hydrogen (H2), or does it break up into hydrogen atoms (H ), for example? I know that hydrogen adds across a carbon-carbon double bond, how can it do this if it's still molecular hydrogen? Are there any other reactions that hydrogen can take part in, in the presence of platinum, other than adding across a carbon-carbon double bond? If hydrogen does break up into hydrogen radicals, is it free to react with anything else which may be present in solution?

We then have the reactions Surface H + C2H4 --> surface C2H5 Surface C2H5 + surface H --> Gaseous C2H6 The reaction is not so much of free radical reaction, as the addition of "Pt-H" across the double bond (compare the addition of H-Br) In solution, H2 bubbled over finely divided Pt gives the famous "platinum electrode", which catalyses redox equilibria involving H2 and H+: H2 <==> 2 surface H surface H + H2O <==> H3O+ + e- on Pt This electron can be transferred to reducible species in solution, or… [cont.]
