In sociology or anthropology, social status is the honor or prestige attached to one's position in society (one's social position). The stratification system, which is the system of distributing rewards to the members of society, determines social status. Social status, the position or rank of a person or group within the stratification system, can be determined two ways. One can earn their social status by their own achievements, which is known as achieved status, or one can be placed in the stratification system by their inherited position, which is called ascribed status.

Why do women care so much about social status when dating?
Q. And please don't answer this with a "why do men care so much about looks". If you want to discuss male preferences you can start your own thread. Fair? So whats with this obsession women have with social status and "popularity" etc? Why? I really just want to know WHY.. because I don't get it.

A. First of all, I wouldn't call it obsession. It seems to be a perfectly reasonable way for women to choose between men that are after her. What other ways can a woman choose a man to date? Looks? (Sure, I would say its just is important as social status) Personality? (Hard to define and even harder to judge)

Why are females looks related to their social status, but not so much for males?
Q. Usually, the better looking the female, the higher her social value is. But with males, this is not necessarily the case. Why do you think there is a difference in the perceived social worth of an individual? I would like to add that this is true during and after school. When you walk into a social setting (bar, restaurant, any gathering) everyone looks at you and sums up where you are on the social scale.

A. The theory is that this is actually tied to evolution. A woman's social value is determined by her physical appearance because that indicates her ability to produce offspring that will then go on to produce offspring (i.e. symmetrical facial features, curves, full lips, etc.). On the flip side of the issue, men's social value tends to be determined by their financial worth. The idea here is that because women invest more in the child producing process, they are left in the position of power and will most likely choose a mate who can provide for her. I have no idea if this is true or not, but the theory provides a pretty compelling argument for why young, attractive women and rich men are the most desirable mates.

Is having a large or decent social status an important quality when looking for a guy ladies?
Q. I'm interested in what you ladies have to say. I for one only had a very small group of friends growing up. Would that quality alone make me uninteresting? Be truthful.
