A woman's social value is determined by her physical appearance because that indicates her ability to produce offspring that will then go on to produce offspring (i.e. symmetrical facial features, curves, full lips, etc.). On the flip side of the issue, men's social value tends to be determined by their financial worth. The idea here is that because women invest more in the child producing process, they are left in the position of power and will most likely choose a mate who can provide for her. I have no idea if this is true or not, but the theory provides a pretty compelling argument for why young, attractive women and rich men are the most desirable mates.
